One of the most spectacular roads in Romania, built in the time of the Communism, the road called "Transfagarasan" crosses the Fagaras Mountains and connects Transylvania with Wallachia (sepating Arges and Sibiu counties). Transfagarasan is the second high road in Romania, climbing up to 2042 meters, with a length of 90 km. The Transfagarasan starts in the village of Arefu, in Arges county, at km 61 of the 7C national road and ends in the village of Cartisoara (Sibiu county), at the junction with the national road no. 1. It is a road with many coils, that passes through a 900 m tunnel the main ridge of the mountains with over 2,000 m height. The road has many tunnels and viaducts - at Balea Lac the road passes through the longest road tunnel in Romania - Balea tunnel. During the winter, the transport from the Balea Lake to Balea Falls may be by cable car over a distance of 3,800 m. The road is closed to traffic in late October to June due to snow covering the road
Fagaras Mountains are ones of the most picturesque areas in the Carpathians, located at the south of the town of Medias. The mountain range has various heights above 2000 m, many waterfalls and glacial lakes. Also here you can visit the natural reservations from Balea and Arpasel, both protected because of the diversity of flora and rare species that live here. At Balea Lac start many trails leading to Moldoveanu Peak - 2544 m.
