Description of the destination Sighetu Marmatiei

Sighetu Marmatiei is a city of Maramures county, near the border with Ukraine.
Situated at an altitude of 274 m, at the confluence of Iza and Tisa rivers, Sighet city is a cultural and economic center of Maramures. It has a triangular shape, is bordered to the north of the border with Ukraine, to the north-east of the village of Bocicoiu Mare, to the south and west of the villages of Rona de Jos and Vadu Izei and to the west of the village of Sarasau. On the southwestern side it is bordered by the volcanic chain of Gutai.
The name of the coty has undergone minor modifications over the history from Zygeth, Sihet, Sziget, Maramorosszighet, Sighet, Marmatia and finally Sighetu Marmatiei. It was documentary attested since 1326, but in the area there were found archaeological remains of other human settlements, earlier than documentary attestation.
According to the 1901 census, the city had 21.370 inhabitants, of whom 82% were Hungarians, 9.4% Romanians, 5.9% Germans and Ukrainians, 2.5% Carpatho - Russians. These statistics do not take account of the Hebrew population of Sighet, which was very numerous before the Holocaust. According to some sources, in 1940, Sighet had the highest percentage of Hebrew population of all of Romania. Following the 2002 census, the city population had 41.246 inhabitants, of which 79, 5% were Romanians.
Among the famous figures who have lived and influenced the life of the city Sighetu Marmatiei, we mention: Joel Teitelbaum (Hasidic rabbi), Elie Wiesel, Nobel Peace prize laureate, Alexandru Ivasiuc (writer), Dolezalek Friedrich (chemist, researcher, teacher), Kornellia Priel (actress), Mihai Borodi (sculptor) and Simon Corbu.
Monuments and buildings:

- Sighet prison - in Sighet worked the dreaded prison used by the communist for murder of the elite of Romaniei. Since 1944, the prison building is arranged as a museum.

- Victims of Communism Memorial, is the most important touristic point of the city. Former prison turned into a monument of pain, it was put in 1995 under the aegis of Council of Europe.

- Maramures Village Museum is an architectural rustic monument, consisting of houses and households grouped by main subareas of historic Maramures.

- Ethnographic Museum of Maramures, situated in the center of the city in the building where today is hosted the cinema. In the museum you can see objects used over time in the occupations of the people of Maramures and also icons on glass and wood, pieces of popular costumes, masks used for different holidays.

- Museum of Jewish Culture, with an exhibition dedicated to the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Elie Wiesel.
- Dr.Ioan Mihaly of Apsa House Museum.

- Festival of the habits and customs of winter "Marmatia", takes place on December 27, on city streets. The highlight of the event is the parade in traditional costumes specific to the region from which came the "devils" and masked characters, the riders and wagons decorated for celebration.
