Description of the destination Satu Mare

Satu Mare County is situated in the north – west of Romania, having a total surface of 4,418 km², in the cross-border area with Hungary and Ukraine, bordering the counties of Bihor, Salaj and Maramures. The relief of the county varies from 120 m up to 1240 m, comprising plains (63%), hills (20%) and mountains (17%). The climate is temperate - continental. The hydrographic network includes: Someş River (60 km in the county), Tur River (66 km in the county) and Crasna River (57 km in the county).

The administrative structure of the county is the following: two cities (Satu Mare - 115,630 inhabitants and Carei - 23,268 inhabitants); two towns (Negreşti Oaş - 13,956 inhabitants and Tăşnad - 9,649 inhabitants); 57 communes (having 226 villages – 206,593 inhabitants).

The most important areas in terms of tourism are:
Codru area - presents attractive landscapes such as those of Oteloaia, Apa, Bolzii Valley, Crucisor, Hodişa, Izvorul lui Pintea, and the surroundings with mineral springs (Beltiug) and thermal springs (Dobra and Acas).
Oas Country area situated along the route Satu Mare - Sighetu Marmatiei, with the possibility of communication, on the asphalt road, with the historical Maramures and northern Moldavia; it is a complex area, with valuable points of interest and varied attractive landscapes, folk art and folklore and famous products (brandy from Oas).

Among the major points of tourist interest, we mention:
SATU MARE – seat of the county - offers a range of attractions for visitors:
- County Museum includes departments of archeology, history, ethnography and folk art (section arranged in a building from XVIII century in Gothic and Baroque style, historical monument).
- Art Museum: built in the second half of the nineteenth century, in Gothic style, bought in 1798 and subsequently modified by Baron Vecsey, being also known as the “House Vecsey”; it houses now the art department of the County Museum.
- The Roman Catholic Cathedral - built between 1786-1798, in neoclassical style; it has monumental portal, with attic gable supported by six Corinthian capital columns.

- Firefighters tower overlooking the area around the old town is a building dating from 1904.
- Bixad Monastery - located in the village with the same name. Monastic life at Bixad exists from the time of the Princely Maramures, the house of worship being there for sure in the XVIth century. Between 1981-1988 there were restoration works under the guidance of National Cultural Heritage. On the spiritual cultural plan was given a special attention to restoring the monastery library, which now numbers over 3,000 volumes, both from acquisitions and donations. For dwelling of the monastery there were made two icons, "Savior" and "Mother of God", equipping the church with all the necessary objects for the divine service. The Orthodox Church dedicated to "St. Apostles Peter and Paul"is one of the few monuments of stone existing in this part of the Romanian land. The monument, with stone walls, keeps the Byzantine plan, cross shaped, with lateral semicircular apses and a tall tower.
- Luna Ses recreation area – it will be developped a tourist area for winter sports through a planning and realization of tourism potential. The attraction of the place is explained by the short distance towards urban areas and easily accessible, by warm weather protected from winds, by the relatively rich river network (Talna, Brada, Tiganului valleys) and populated with trout, by the possibilities that offers for camping and hiking on marked routes, by mineral soda water springs, indicated in digestive diseases and diabetes.
