Description of the destination Sacaramb

Sacaramb is a locality in Hunedoara County.

The access to this locality is on the road Deva – Soimus - Certeju de Sus – Sacaramb - Geoagiu.

Hidden in a volcanic crater that died thousands of years ago, Sacaramb still houses now traces of the past. Once, this place located just 20 km from Deva, was the real "El Dorado" of Europe, the place where everyone came to dress in gold.

Sacaramb is part of the Apuseni Mountains quadrilateral gold. It was a unique mining town in the world, within which were discovered more than 100 types of minerals, two of which are unique in the world, other 5 were identified only in South Africa. The first adit made its way through the mountain walls in 1746; until today hundreds of galleries have developed. For 128 years, the mining complex was considered the most profitable in Europe; we achieved over 40 tons of gold in this deposit.

The name of this locality is known around the world, causing great interest among scientists, both through structural-genetic complexity of deposits and especially by the mineralogical rarities found. Krenerit, muthmannit, sacarambit, telluric are minerals wich were discovered in this area. Sacaramb has enriched not only mineralogy but also chemistry with an unknown element to it: telluric.

In the surroundings of Sacaramb were found a vessel containing gold coins and a bronze chain. The coins are Roman and they are known for their general trade relations by Dacians before the Roman conquest.

Sacaramb was developed along with the mine. In 1835 was founded the first Secondary School of Mining in Southeastern Europe. Sacaramb had a population of 14.000 – 15.000 inhabitants, while Deva only had a population of 8.000 inhabitants. There were functional several banks, shops, stores, 3 butchers, brewery and of course a casino. Then, over time, came the decline.

Sacaramb is now a holiday village.

Points of interest:

- Striked church, as locals call it, was a Greek Catholic church, built in 1800 and destroyed by a lightning. Its ruins guard the city, from the ridge on which it was built.

- Shrine of St. Varvara, protector of miners;

- Spring Franz Joseph;

- In a radius of 10-15 km downstream come at the surface carbonated and thermal mineral waters;

- On the steep cliffs of Sacaramb there are growing irises and in rocky places there are carpets of wild geranium, blue gentian species and large carpets of Vinca minor.
