Description of the destination Poiana Marului

Leaving Caransebes on DN 68, after 20 km, we reach Oţelu Rosu; from the railway station of Zăvoi village, we turn right; after 12 km we reach the dam of Măru and after another 8 km, on a beautiful concrete road, we reach Poiana Mărului resort.

The development of Poiana Mărului area began thanks to the Government Ordinance amended in 1936, regarding the establishment of the two resorts, Muntele Mic and Poiana Mărului. Interest in this area was manifested from the time of the Dacians; there are here many vestiges, among which the most important is a pagan altar at an altitude of 1200 m on the northern slope of Muntele Mic massif. Called by locals “Pietrele Scorile”, the area seems to have been the favorite hunting place of the Dacians. On the tourist route Muntele Mic - Poiana Mărului, on the Scorilo valley, the legend says that the Dacian king, Scorilo, father of Decebal, would be buried there (at Sarmizegetusa was discovered the famous inscription "Decebalus per Scorilo").

With the establishment of the steelworks in the city of Oţelu Red (former Ferdinand), in 1880, there have been colonized and attracted to this city a large number of workers. Poiana Mărului became a logging area, but also a recreation area, as demonstrated by former forest trains, which has attached also passenger cars. Forest line Zăvoi - Poiana Mărului was built in 1907 and in 1937 a railcar with trailer circulated jeer (like a tram).

The first accommodation units were “Aca de Barbu” villa, owned by an Italian family, and Bistra villa, built by the Timişoara people, in the same period when on Muntele Mic began the constructions. Once, there here was a sanatorium for the tuberculosis patients.

“The watering and climatic resort of Poiana Mărului”, as it was named after the World War II, with new opportunities for expansion with the completion of the hydro-technical works on Bistra Mărului, has developed with the construction of the Scorilo hotel. The hotel was inaugurated in 1977 and it worked until 1997. It had the same fate as Sebes hotel on Muntele Mic. It has a maximum capacity of 412 beds in 72 rooms.

An important moment in the development of tourism of this resort was the beginning of the construction of Măru rockfill dam. Currently, the existing accumulation of water is an attraction of the resort. Deposits in the dam started in 1984 and were completed in 1992, when it reached a height of 125 m. With thisconstruction, the access road to the resort has been changed and, being arranged a new road that passes over the dam and continue on the southwestern shore of the lake; the old road has now been flooded. The hydrographic potential of the area has been harnessed since 1930, when it was built a power plant. Now the main headrace, Măru - Ruieni, with an interior concrete diameter of 4.9 m and a total length of 9.8 kilometers, take the waters, under the mountains, in the underground power plant of Turnu Ruieni - a power plant with 153 MW – taking the waters to Zervesti Lake.

All the relief with the climate, flora, fauna, favored the emergence of Poiana Mărului, situated in a very beautiful scenery, dominated by coniferous and deciduous forests, spread between Muntele Mic, Nedeia and Varful Pietrii. The resort offers its visitors a more distant view of the mountains Ţarcu and Retezat. Here is the starting point of several hiking trails: through Saua Iepii (1727 m), between the Bloju Massif and Baicu, to Gura Apei, where there is a large accumulation lake for the hydroelectric powerplant of Rau de Mori; through Valea Şucului, to the heights of Cuntu and Ţarcu; on Scorila brook valley to Muntele Mic; from the trout lake, on Culmea Nedeii, to Nedeii peak. The county road DJ 683, at about 4.5 kilometers to Muntele Mic, crosses the Şucu - Oltean peat spruce forest, protected area where you can admire the angelica plant (herbaceous aromatic plant, whose root is used in pharmaceuticals), Cypripedium calceolus or the rose bay  (with red flowers with a pleasant smell) and animals like bears, chamois, royal raven or eagle.

From the legends that abound in the area, we increasingly believe that the Dacians had a religious life, which connected to the mountains and magnificence of these heights. Poiana Mărului was, for centuries, the place of stay of shepherds that were climbing to the places of grazing on these heights, something that made that the inhabitants of the villages who were feeding the sheep in the massive of Gugu were named “Gugulani”. One of the most interesting legends of the area it seems to be related to the treasure of Scorilo. Pietrele Scorilo, Cleanţul Scorilo, Cioaca (Creasta) Scorilo are old name, from the Dacian times, which remained and were passed over the centuries, with the belief that there is a treasure of the Dacian kings in this area. In a survey among older shepherds there were found more interesting things, leading to an understanding of this place in many ways. They say that in the rock of Scorilo, with a straight wall, it is found, somewhere in the middle, at a distance of 40 m of the foot and 40 m of the ridge, a cave where the treasure is hidden. The place should be marked by the first ray of sun that send its light over the ridge called Buza Nedeii and falls in the middle of the wall, at sunrise, on June 21, on summer solstice. This is quite hard to accept. In a crystalline rock composed of shales, natural caves can not form. In a more detailed search of the rock, it was found only a side room that appears to have been carved into the rock, as a shelter for shepherds that were climbing to Muntele Mic. After a detailed observation of the indicated place, it can be seen kind of canopy, as a recess. To elucidate this legend, there can be done detailed researches of the walls of Scorilo rock. In general, the shepherds do not want to talk about this area, considering it as a taboo area, a sacred area. Now, following the discoveries of Traiana Ulpia Sarmizegetusa, we know that there was a Dacian king named Scorilo and his name was preserved in the area without being changed.

The locality of Poiana Mărului was, at first, a place with a house of a forester; later appeared more houses, of hunters and fishermen, and then recreational homes.

Currently, the resort is growing rapidly, with the building of many recreation villas, a church and several little hotels.
For the good operation of tourist resorts Poiana Mărului and Muntele Mic there are necessary better links between them, continuing the road of Valea Şucului and the construction of a cable car line. It is envisaged the access to Pietrele Scorile ski area and the breakthrough from Vâlsanu Valley to Muntele Mic.

All this, together with the hotel, which is under renovation, is creating premises for revival of tourism in the area.

2009 News:

The two councils of this corner of Banat Mountain area, the local council of Turnu Ruieni commune and the local council of Zavoi commune, patronized by Caras Severin County Council together with Teleferic Alpin and Scorillo companies, gave birth to a partnership lasting for 49 years, which aims to create Borlova-Muntele Mic – Poiana Marului ski domain, the engine of further development of this tourist resorts.

Teleferic Alpin and Scorillo companies have purchased last year the two emblematic hotels of the two resorts: Scorilo hotel in Poiana Marului, respectively Sebes hotel in Muntele Mic, and also the longest fixed chairlift line in Europe, with a length of 3492m. In the ‘70s, there has been a project of Proiect Brasov Company to unificate the two resorts and hotel units, building on the north side a new resort, Muntele Mic II, incorporating new ski slopes. After a break of 40 years we want to bring to life this project and expand it to Borlova and to the mountains that flank Poiana Marului so that, finally, inaugurate a ski area with over 60 km of interconnected slopes located on different mountains, with varying degrees of difficulty and great diversity. The two above mentioned companies have invested until now in the acquisition of these objectives and in designing future locations the amount of 5 000 000 euros. This year our objective is the installation of at least ne gondola, possibly two, and the rehabilitation of Sebes hotel in Muntele Mic. The installation of the gondola will bring in a first phase 10 km of new ski slopes. Minimum investment for 2009 is approximately 4 million euros. The two hotels will be fully upgraded to 3 and 4 stars level. They will have a total built area of 24 000 sqm and they will accommodate up to 750 tourists. The existing chiarlift has been partially restored and this year will be changed the dashboard, the roller batteries and the drive group, so that speed is going grow and its capacity will be increased. Within 3 years, we aim to complete all installations on Muntele Mic. There will be created 200 jobs at the two hotels and lifts installations. We estimate that the development of the ski infrastructure will bring investors in the accommodation units’ area and the total investments in the first 5 years will be of 60 million euros, creating at least 1.000 jobs.
