Description of the destination Ploiesti

Ploiesti city is the seat of Prahova County.

It is located at 60 km from Bucharest. It is bordered to the north with Blejoi village, to the south the communes of Barcanesti and Brazi, to the west with Targusoru Vechi villageand to the east with Bucov.

Ploiesti is a main transport hub, situated on the highway that connects Bucharest to Transylvania and Moldavia.

It is also called “the capital of the black gold”, as the city is the ancient center of the oil industry, with four refineries and other industries related to this industry (such as: machinery construction, electrical equipment).

The city of Ploiesti is located in the heart of Wallachia, in the central-northern area of the Romanian Plain. Ploiesti is crossed by the 26 degrees E meridian and the 44 degrees N parallel. The municipality occupies an area of 60 square kilometers, of which 35 square kilometers is represented by the suburban municipalities.

Ploiesti is located between two major rivers, the first of them, Prahova, in the southwest, reaching easily the city by the suburban village Brazi, and the second, Teleajen, in the north and east, crossing the suburban areas Blejoi, Bucov and Berceni. The city is situated on the river Dambu, which wells in the hilly area of the town of Baicoi, passing through the town and two suburban communes and then through the village of Rafov, where it flows into Teleajen.

The average annual temperature is 10.5 degrees C and minimum and maximum values were: -30 degrees C the 25/01/1942 and 43 degrees C the 07/19/2007.

Legend says that the city of Ploiesti was founded by a certain Mos Ploaie. Archaeologists have found traces of habitation from the Paleolithic to Targusorul Vechi and from the tenth century to Bucov. The first documentary mentions on the city of Ploiesti date from 1503 and 1545, and in Bereasca neighborhood there was discovered a peasant settlement from the eleventh century.

In 1597 Mihai Viteazul (Michael the Brave) declared Ploiesti as a princely fair; here it was settled the royal court and the military camp of the ruler. Favored by its geographical position, Ploiesti has experienced in centuries the XVII and XVIII a strong development, distinguishing itself as a manufacturing and commercial center. In the second half of the XIX century the city enters in a new period of development, driven by the discovery of oil and the building of the first distillation and the first refinery at the barrier Rafov-Ploiesti. In 1858 the city had its first lighting system based on kerosene and in 1900 the lighting system of the town was electrified.
