Description of the destination Petrosani

Petrosani Municipality is located in Hunedoara County.

It has a population of 45,447 inhabitants and is situated 100 km from the county seat, Deva, and 370 km from Bucharest.
Petrosani history begins somewhere in 1640, when 20 of serfs in Petros are considered the first inhabitants of this land. The first name of this settlement was Petroseni. Petrosani was mentioned for the first time in documents as a settlement in 1788. Colonel Locotenet Gotze made a trip to the Orient and returned from Turkey through the Romanian countries. In his book “Journey from Potsdam to Constantinople”, he recalls Petrosani.
The relief is extremely uneven, specific to the mountain area, with narrow paths of the two Jiu Rivers. The mountain massifs bordering the depression are: Valcan Mountains to the south, Retezat Mountains to the north, Parang Mountains to the east and Godeanu Mountains to the west; the maximum altitude of the area is 2519 meters in Parangul Mare Peak.

The hydrographic network is composed of two large rivers: East Jiu and West Jiu. In the area of Petrosani municipality, Western Jiu receives four tributaries.

Favorized by the Transylvanian Carpathians relief, the Jiu Valley offers a unique natural environment. Although traditionally this region is not considered a tourist destination, there are some arguments that say otherwise:
- Jiu Valley is the main gateway to the National Park Retezat and the access to Parang, Retezat and Valcan mountains.
- Jiu Valley tourist area is relatively undiscovered region. Due to its geographical location and socio-economic background, frostier and mountain areas have suffered effects of anthropogenic transformations like most European tourist resorts. Here there can be discovered caves; tourists can make hiking undisturbed by the noise of mechanized convoys. You can explore virgin trails and can find rocks for climbing, yet impregnable.
- The whole area is ennobled by the presence of the brown bear, chamois, wild boar and wolf.
Both residents and tourists of Petrosani City can enjoy a nice walk or a moment of peace and relaxation in these parks:
- Central Park;

- I. L. Caragiale Park, with an area of 0.3 ha;

- Anghel Salygni Park, with an area of 0.5 ha;

- European Community Park, with an area of 0.3 ha;

- Pensioners Park, with an area of 0.2 ha;

- Central Square Park, with an area of 0.8 ha;

Historical Monuments in the City of Petrosani:

- Holy Archangels Wooden Church – XVIII century;

- Former officials casino - 1905, currently it hosts the theater I. D. Sarbu;

- Princele Mircea former dispensary, 1925, currently it is the Cultural Students’ House;

- Former worker casino;

- Former head of the Mining Syndicate.

Natural protected area:

The administrative territory of the Municipality of Petrosani includes two protected natural areas, approved by the Decree nr.11/1704/1995 of the County Council of Petrosani:

1.      "Momarlani" Area - Jiu Valley;

2.      "Piatra Crinului" area in Parangul Mic, with an area of 0.5 ha.

Petrosani is the main city in the Jiu Valley. Here is situated the National Coal Company, which includes several mines.
