Description of the destination Orastie

Orastie Municipality is located in the eastern site of Hunedoara County, at 27 km away from the seat of the county, the city of Deva.

Orastie municipality is framed by the Mures passage. It is surrounded by Sureanu Mountains and the southern branch of the Apuseni Mountains (Metaliferi Mountains). The climate is characterized by an annual average temperature of 9 degrees, July average temperature registering 20 degrees and -3 degrees Celsius in January.

In 1999, the city of Orastie celebrated 775 years since the first documentary attestation. But those 775 years are just one link in a long historical past, whose beginning is lost in the mist of time, confirmed by numerous traces of material and spiritual civilization discovered in the city. The latest archaeological research revealed ample evidence material of "Turdas"Neolithic culture and later ages. Accidental discoveries have confirmed the development of Roman civilization.

Because of its historical traditions, cultural importance and the degree of economic and urban development, in 1995, Orastie was called a municipality. Now, at the anniversary of 775 years, citizens of the city honor great personalities, bringing them their tribute of gratitude for the work to increasing fame of this town.

Reorganized in 1999, because of its collections, the museum exhibit to the visitors representative aspects of the rural universe of Hunedoara County and especially of the Orastie area.

The exhibition is taking place within 6 rooms, thematically arranged, including principal occupations (farming, grazing), secondary character occupations (harvesting of nature, hunting, fishing, pasturage, woodworking, weaving, leather processing), archaeological and numismatic collections and issues relating to folk costumes, traditions and customs, religion and spiritual life.

Dacian Fortresses in Orastie Mountains – the fortresses from Costesti (19 km from Orastie), Blidaru (21 km), Cetatuie (22 km) and Piatra Rosie are part of the complex of fortifications which had to defend the capital of Dacia.
