Description of the destination Mehedinti
Mehedinti County is located in the south-west of Romania, on the left bank of the Danube, having an area of 4900 km ². Mehedinti County is bordering the following counties: Caras-Severin in the west, Gorj in the north, Dolj in south-east and Serbia and Bulgaria in the south. The bridge of hydropower and navigation "Portile de Fier (Iron Gates)" connects Drobeta Turnu-Severin and Belgrade (300km), Istanbul (700km), Athens (950km) and Rome (2000km).
Mehedinti County has beautiful variations of relief and landscapes, hills, mountains, swift rivers, large and deep caves, pass with amazing openness, monastic settlements such as the monasteries Saint Ann, Tismana, Vodita and last but not least, many historical traces. You can enjoy an active stay practicing hiking in the mountains, fishing, recreational boating on the Danube, expeditions in the caves that are a real treasure for speleologists.
Drobeta Turnu – Severin, the seat of the county of Mehedinti, offers the following sights:
· Ruins of Trajan's Bridge (bridge built between the wars waged by the Dacian king Decebal against Traian)
· Drobeta Camp built in 1930 in medieval style
· Ruins of medieval church situated near the Roman camp
· City Museum - The building of the museum is hosting the departments of archeology and ethnography, and the park in the front of it is a true exhibition of ruins: the ruins of Roman thermal baths, the ruins of Trajan's bridge, the ruins of the old Metropolitanates of Severin.
· Portile de Fier Museum (Iron Gates), with sections of history, archeology, ethnography, natural sciences and a great aquarium
· Harbor with boats, barges, with gulls and albatrosses, at only 1200 m from the Serbian shore
· Park of Roses - near the train station, with medieval ruins of Severin
In the north of Mehedinti County is the village of Ponoarele (at 37 km of Motru railway station, at 65 km from Drobeta Turnu Severin, 45 km from Targu Jiu) with the largest forest of lilac in the country (20 hectares) which attract by its scent lovers of nature and folklore to the “Lilac Festival”. God's Bridge is a limestone arch, with a length of 60 meters and a width of 9.7 meters, the second largest natural bridge in Europe and the only operational bridge (the road Drobeta Turnu Severin-Baia de Arama - Baile Herculane passes over it). The bridge was formed by the collapse of a wall of Bulba Cave that, by the 5.000 meters of galleries and the inside architecture, is a great tourist attraction. Above the cave and the bridge there is a hill full of hellebore and karst formations such as the wrinkles between the limestone which make up the field and fields of Aphrodite and Cleopatra, unique in Europe, at altitudes of up to 600 meters. On the other exit of the cave we find Zaton Lake, a lake of karstic origin, which, having connections with the hydrographic system o the cave, is when full when empty and cracked.
14 km from Severin Drobeta, on the road that connects the town Drobeta with Calafat is the locality of Hinova, that offers the possibility of a boat ride on the Danube, a fishing party, or a beach tanning session. Also, there can also be seen Hinova fortress walls, and the Acacia forest that scent the area is a meeting point of beekeepers across the country, because of the Mediterranean climate that make the Acacia bloom earlier than the rest of the country.
Multiple viaducts over the Danube, which connect the Drobeta Turnu Severin to Orsova, Vodita Monastery (1371), hydro – electric station Iron Gates I.
Orsova city - situated on the banks of the Danube and the river Cerna, ordered as a amphitheater, offering the possibility of visiting the Catholic Cathedral, Saint Ann Monastery, situated on one of the peaks that guard the city.
Large and small boilers - places where the Danube gorges narrow and the river looks like it is boiling. The karst formations of Ciucarul Mare massif and Ponicova cave (BLiliecilor), with 1600 meters of galleries. The area comprises 215 hectares of natural reservation of plants such as iris, oriental beech, Turkish hazelnut, pubescent oak and rare beings in Romania such as: horned viper, eagle, turtle, Scorpio, lynx, the Egyptian vulture.
Simian islet - island situated downstream of Drobeta Turnu Severin, where it was was displaced the cfortress of the former Ada-Kaleh island, now under the accumulation lake.
The town of Baia de Arama where you can visit the Sfintii Voievozi church, built in Byzantine style and painted in the XVII century. At about 4 km north-west of Baia de Arama there is Ponoare karst complex. You can also visit in this area Topolnita cave with an explored length of 10.330 m, being the second largest cave in the country.
Bala watering and climate resort with thermo-mineral water. Bala resort mineral waters are as good as those of Herculane, and in some ways even better and stronger than them, but unfortunately the mineral reserves are underused.
Cracul Gaioara Botanical Reservation – the feather grass of Portile de Fier vegetates on Cracul Gaioarei, the only place in the world where it was seen. Portile de Fier feateher grass meadows, well preserved, have been identified on the Danube side Cracul Gaioara.
Oglanicului Valley Botanical Reservation is located downstream of Gura Vaii, opposite the island of Ostrovul Banului, with a rich flora and fauna rich in specific elements of Portile de Fier.
Cracul Crucii Botanical Reservation is situated near the dam, above the Mosul tunnel and spread to the plateau called by locals “Saint Peter Cross”. Here there are meadows of rare landscape value.
Gura Vaii - Varciorova Botanical Reservation stands out by the richness of plant species, many of them representing rarities of Romania and they are present in all floors of vegetation.
Fata Virului Botanical Reservation is located at 4.5 kilometers of Varciorova towards Gura Vaii, in front of the Iron Gates, between Slatinicul water and Virului Crest. The varied relief, very tormented, the small waterfalls and the gorges give this area a special picturesque. Here, there are meadows with dill of Iron Gates, one of the characteristic species of Iron Gates narrow path.
Dohomnei Hill Botanical Reservation is situated between the Bahnea Valley and Voditei Valley. Here there are protected the "osieci" forests and also the ancient forests where predominate the Turkish hazelnut tree and the oak.
Bahna paleontological reservation is located between the localities of Ilovita and Bahna, 4 km of the national road. It is one of the oldest and interesting fossils points in the country, of great scientific value. Limestone karst cliffs preserve a fossil fauna of 16 million years old.
Large Boilers and Small Boilers Complex Reservation is located between Ogradena Valley and Ogasul Turcului brook, where the Danube River crosses two gorges (Large Boilers and Small Boilers) separated by the Dubova basins. Here there are large forests of beech, hornbeam, ash, Turkish hazelnut tree. On the inaccessible slopes it grows the Cazane tulip, rock iris, Cazare bellflower.Vipera with corn, sea eagle, rock - martin, land turtle - are the key elements of local fauna. In the Danube Boilers predominates a limestone relief represented by sinkholes, caves and lapies. Veterani, Climent, Ponicova caves have been inhabited from the epi-Paleolithic until the XVIII century.
Sviniţa paleontological reservation, located on Saraorschi, Tigani and Vodiniciki valleys, is one of the most important fossils points in the Carpathians. The red limestone from Sviniţa contain the richest ammonites fauna in the country. Ammonites, these giant snails, contemporary with the dinosaurs, could reach a diameter of 2 m. In this area of international scientific interest, ammonites are representative of Medium Jurassic (176 million years).
Natural Bridge from Ponoare is a natural arch of about 25 m long, 8 m wide and 14 meters high. Formed by the collapse of a cave ceiling, is a unique phenomenon in the country.
Cave Bridge, with a length of 633 m, is the origin of Natural Bridge from Ponoare.
Zaton Cave, located in Zaton steepness, has a length of 105 m.
Zaton Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes of karst origin in the country.
Lapies fields represent the most valuable element of this complex, the most outstanding lapies field in the country. It offers a unique landscape by its aridity and the deep carving of the limestone under a waterproof covering on a large area.
Lilac forest from Ponoare is located near the village Ponoarele, with an area of 20 hectares, of which approx. 10 ha is a forest reservation and was declared a natural monument. Besides Lilac and manna ash, that are the main species, there are also the oak, horn, hornbeam, Turkish cherry. In this forest, in the first part of May, there is the biggest celebration of Mehedinti County – the Lilac Festival.
Topolnita Cave, one of the largest caves in the country, has a length of 25 km of galleries. Topolnita Cave is a complex of galleries and passages arranged on several floors that overlap in spirals, wells and siphons. Many lakes, sparkling like ice in the light of flashlights, sometimes interrupt the underground water, enhancing the beauty of the cave. In the cave there are galleries decorated with stalactites and columns, with stalagmites, with garlands, curtains, canopy and translucent waves of spotless calcite. Such an example is the gallery Racovita, very rich in calcite formations such as the Forest of Candles or the Crystal Lake, both of a rare beauty.
Epuran's Cave, with a length over 3 km, has galleries on two floors, one superior fossil and one inferior, active. The cave is a complex of halls and galleries, with many ramifications, with collapsed limestone blocks. In Bears Hall there are a lot of cave bear skeletons, fixed in time on the floor with white calcite crystals. The most beautiful area of the cave is the Treasure Gallery, justified by the richness and variety of the concretions. Epuran's Cave is actually the most northern part of the Topolnita cave.
Other points of tourist interest are: Bulba Gorges, Costesti Gorges, Topolnita Gorges, wooden church Sts. Apostles Peter and Paul in Brebina, wooden church of St. Voievozi in Godeanu, wooden church of St Voievozi in Isverna, Royal Church St Trinity in Cerneti, the Church of former monastery of St. 24 Voievozi in Baia de Arama, Grecescu Church in Drobeta Turnu Severin, Gura Motrului Monastery, Vodita Monastery, Cetate Strehaia Monastery, Holy Cross Topolnita Hermitage, Ada Kaleh ruins, Trikule fortress ruins, Gheorghe Radulescu Motru Memorial House.
