Description of the destination Medias

Medias is the second largest city of Sibiu County. It is located in the middle basin of the Târnava Mare River, at a distance of 39 km of Sighisoara, 41 km of Blaj and 55 km of Sibiu.
In the census of March 2002, Medias had a population of 55 203 inhabitants.
In the XII and XIII centuries, the Hungarian kings settled in the area of Medias German colonists, known as the Saxons. It seems that the first documentary attestation of Mediasdates from the year of 1267. In 1318, the Saxons of Medias and those in Seica Mare were exempted from participating in the royal army, getting also some tax privileges.
In 1402 King Sigismund of Luxembourg issued Medias and Seica seats under the jurisdiction of Szeklers committee.
First Romanian Church in Medias was built in 1826 by Bishop John Bob; he also established the Romanian first school in town.
Medias is a picturesque town that combines old and new and an alternation of styles from Gothic to the Renaissance and the Baroque to Secession.
The fortified church Saint Margaret has a valuable set of murals gothic paintings and the tower has a watch that shows phases of the moon. This church is important because here was closed the dark prince of the Romanian Country Vlad the Impaler, in 1476.
The historic center of Medias is an open air museum. The medieval monuments of the square of the castle are unique in Transylvania. The town is over 7 centuries old, being mentioned for the first time in a historical document in 1267; it is one of the oldest towns in Romania.
Major tourist attractions:
- the 5 towers of the city: Tailors Tower, Trumpet Tower, Bells Tower, Stonemasons’ Tower, Smiths Tower;
- Schuller House;
- Forkesch Tower;
- the Franciscan architectural complex includes the Franciscan church and monastery, which, around 1444, were built by the Franciscan order. The complex houses exhibits of great value: hoard of Seica Mica, hoard of Panade, various pieces of folk pottery.

- 18 km from Medias is the watering and climate resort Bazna, documentary certified in 1302. The resort has mineral water springs, rich in salt, mineral mud and Bazna salt.
