Description of the destination Maramures

Maramures County is located in the north western Romania, on the border with Ukraine. The county is bordering Salaj, Cluj, Bistrita – Nasaud counties in the South, Satu Mare in the west, Suceava County in the east and Ukraine in the north. The county area is 6304 km ². Almost half of the county's area is represented by mountains. Four distinct mountain ranges separate Moldova by Transylvania. The mountain area is 43%, belonging to the Eastern Carpathians, the hilly area (hills, plateaus and piedmonts) - about 30% and the low area (depressions, plains and terraces) - 27% of the county's area. The main mountain units are: Rodna Mountains (the highest), Maramures Mountains and the volcanic chain Ignis-Gutai-Tibles. The hydrographic network is represented by major rivers such as: Tisa, Viseu, Iza, Lapus and Somes. The predominantly mountainous relief, generally uneven, has heights varying between 200 m in depressions and 2300 m on mountain ridges. Maramures depression is completely surrounded by mountains; in south-west there are teh volcanic mountains Oas Gutai and Tibles, in east Maramures Mountains and in southeast Rodna Mountains (with Pietrosu peak - 2,303 m), with sharp ridges, impressive steeps and beautiful valleys. It also covers parts of Transylvania Subcarpathiens, Somesan Plateau and western Hills. The climate is temperate - continental, the  have the highest level in the country. The water courses cross all the county: Tisa with its tributaries: Viseu (with Cisla, Vaser, Ruscova), Iza (with Mara, Ieud, Botiza), which cross the depression by a wide valley bordered by terraces, South Somes with its tributaries: Lapus,Barsau, and also the springs of mineral water: Borsa, Craciunesti, Breb, Botiza. The hydrography is fulled by natural glacial lakes located in the mountains Rodnei and Gutaiul, by the salty lakes from Ocna Sugatag and Costiui and by the arranged dams of Stramtori-Firiza, with about 18 million cubic meters water to supply Baia Mare, and the ones from Runcu-Brazi-Firiza designed for 30 million cubic meters that will be the source of water supply to areas of Baia Mare and Sighetu Marmatiei.
Maramures County is a particularly valuable natural heritage which include 35 protected natural areas including 3 scientific reservations, 17 natural monuments, 13 natural reservations, 3protected areas of local interest, the most important being:
· Maramures Mountains Natural Park
· Rodna National Park - Biosphere Reservation which include all of the glacial lakes of Rodna and Taul Muced Mountains, Blue Lake (Baia Sprie), Morarenior Lake; Poiana Brazilor swamp; Vlasinescu peat bog, Taul lui Dumitru, Iezerul Mare swamps, Taul Negru peat bog; Lapus river narrow path (confluence with the river Cavnic); the area of Farcau peak and the lake Vinderel; Tisa with its main tributaries: Viseu, Iza and Sapanta; Somes tributaries: Lapus, Salaj and Barsa
Among the most important points of tourist interest, we mention:
Barsana - Barsana wooden church, dedicated to “The entrance to the Church of Our Lady”, UNESCO World Heritage, built in 1720 at the place called " Monastery Bridges " and later, in 1806, moved on Jbar hill, where is now located. Its painting is an outstanding, extremely valuable, tailored after the rigors of Baroque art.
Budesti - Budesti wooden church, built in 1643, Unesco World Heritage; it is dedicated to St. Nicholas. The church is built of thick beams placed on a base of river stones. Inside the church, there are kept the coat of mail and helmet of Pintea (the tradition says about him that he brought them here). The painting is in bright colors, warm and well harmonized. It was made around 1762 by Alexandru Ponehalschi, visible today only on the western half of the walls, the temple and the altar. In the church there are also really old icons on glass, wooden icons dating from the XVII century. Of these, the most significant is an icon depicting St John the Baptist from a fifteenth century church, painted, as the inscription in Slavonic says, for “the unjust Gheorghe”. A specific feature of this monument is the tower. On the ground of the bell there are four towers, unusual architectural detail for the wooden constructions in Maramures.
Desesti wooden church, a UNESCO monument, is a traditional wooden church which is dedicated Cto pious Paraskevi and was built in 1770. The painting, very beautiful, dates from 1780, emphasizing the general note of simplicity. It is unsophisticated, sincere, recalling the naive painting.
The church of Ieud Hill, a UNESCO monument, is built of fir. Historians have not agreed on the date of building of this church. Some documents show is as being the oldest wooden church in Maramures, dating it 1364; according to other opinions, it dates probably from the seventeenth century. The construction follows the traditional canons: paintings and iconostasis, well preserved, are from the eighteenth century. The interior paintings were made by Alexandru Ponehalschi, one of the most active churches painters in Maramures at that time. The narthex walls illustrate the doomsday with a fire of hell which held the convicted. In the church there are old wooden icons (XVI-XVII centuries), a valuable collection of icons on glass brought by Nicula, carpets painted with vegetal colours and books of great value; it’s worth mentioning the Coresi publications "Christian Question"and "The apostle"dating from the fifteenth century, and other documents printed in Iasi and Blaj. In the church attic was found “the Codex from Ieud”, a manuscript of inestimable value, dated in 1391, considered the oldest Romanian text, written in Cyrillic letters.
Plopis Church, a UNESCO monument, is dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel. Good carpenters, Plopis people started building in 1798 a new church, designed to replace the old place of worship, completed in November 12 1811. Church building is small, 17m long, 7m wide and 47m high, but is very well proportioned, being perhaps the most consistent and better balanced wooden church in Maramures, which is why it is inscribed in the category of the most united religious constructions. The painting is well preserved, the dominant note being given by representations of Revelation that occupy the entire west wall of the nave.
"Saint Paraskevi" Church from Poienile Iza, a UNESCO monument, is one of the most beautiful and best preserved monuments in Maramures. Built about 400 years ago, it respects the traditional configuration: ship plan is rectangular, the porch is located on the west side, the roof has double lap and the tower with three bells has turret, helmet and a high cross. Unlike other churches, the altar has four sides as in old times, rare thing in other churches. Paintings, begun in 1794, impress by the themes and original approach to traditional iconography with big stages, in a chromatic harmonic register.
Church of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel, another UNESCO monument, located in the heart of the Tara Lapus, once with enough space for all the inhabitants of the village, was built in 1663 of two solid wood brought from nearby, from the Priest's Hill (Dealul Popii). The uniqueness of this construction is given by the lateral entrance and the asymmetrical roof. Mosilor table is covered by eaves, made of long beams and cut each meter. On the church walls are written the names of wealthy families, owners of the joints mass of Mosilor. During holidays, the families organized dinners in the courtyard of the church, giving alms to the poor people for the souls of the dead. The outside decorations are impressive: the twisted rope-shaped belt with solar symbols surrounding the church and the joining wood giving the walls the appearance of brick walls. The characteristic ornamental element of this church is represented by the ends of beams that support the eaves, carved in the shape of horse head - lay element, present in many of the peasants' houses. Remarkable is the symbolism of this seat; a clear example is the craftsman-beams decorated with motifs of Romanian archaic mythology: Sun, Moon,Morning Star and Stars. The painting, with very diverse themes, was made in 1785 and today is fragmentary preserved, only in the nave and the narthex.
Surdesti wooden church, a UNESCO monument, was built in 1721 under the direct supervision of Toma Macarie and is dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel. It is considered to be the highest old oak building, its tower measuring 54m, surrounded by 4 other small towers, having a total height of 72m above the ground. In the past, people believed that if the church is high, their prayers reach God faster. Besides the impressive height, it should be noted that it is the only church in the country of Chioarului that is covered with lap double roof. It is also unique in this area the porch with two rows of overlapping arches. Interior paintings were made by painter Stefan of Sisesti in 1783 and they represent scenes from the Old and New Testament. The beauty of the church is enhanced by the existence of the twisted rope belt.
Merry Cemetery – the name of the cemetery comes from the colorful crosses and the satirical poems which are written on the crosses. Legend says the cheerful attitude in front of the death is usually one of the Dacians who believed in eternal life and death for them was just passing to another world. They did not see death as a tragic final but as a chance to meet Zamolxe supreme god. The cemetery dates from the mid 1930s and it is a creation of popular artist Stan Ion Patras, sculptor, painter and poet at the same time. Creativity of Patras revealed and celebrated this monumental masterpiece. During more than 50 years, the artist has created hundreds of wooden crosses written in the characteristic style. After his death in 1977 his work was continued by his disciple Dumitru Pop Tincu. The material used for the crosses is the oak which is written by hand after being cut and dry. At the top of every cross there is a bas-relief with scenes from the life of the deceased. The scenes are simple and even in a naive style, but they bring from the past the life of the village residents, presenting a relevant aspect of everyone's life. They show women spinning wool, weaving carpets or making bread, men who chop wood or plough the land, shepherds with their flocks, wood workers, musicians and many other occupations. After the cross is carved it is usually painted with a blue background (so-called “Sapanta Blue”). The scenes are painted using vibrant colors: yellow, red, white and green. Every cross is finished with a short poem, a few simple rhymes, between 7 and 17. Epitaphs are sincere, spontaneous and written in first person, the messages sent by the deceased to the living people. The style is lyrical but satire is frequently found. Each poem contains the name of the deceased as well as an essential aspect of that person's life. With their drawings and poems, Stan Ioan Patras and Dumitru Pop Tincu managed to recreate an entire village and gave people a second life after death. The more than 800 painted crosses constitute a vast archive to preserve the history of the inhabitants of the Cemetery.
Mocanita (Viseu de Sus) – On Vaser valley it runs, puffing hardly, at maximum 30 km/ h, the last "mocanita" in Romania. In the valley, where the only access is the old "steam car" the timbers travel all the time and from time to time, a group of tourists eager for a new experience. Railway line was built between 1930 - 1933, with a length of about 56 km. The locomotives were manufactured in the 1950 in Resita.
