Description of the destination Hunedoara

The County of Hunedoara is located in the central-western part of Romania being intersected by the 46o parallel southern latitude and the 23o meridian eastern longitude. As neighbors we mention the Counties of: Arad, Alba, Vilcea, Gorj, Caras-Severin, Timis and Bihor.
The Countys relief is rough and assorted, predominant mountainous with heights decreasing from 2,500 m in the southern region (Retezat - Parang Mountains, at 200 m in Muresului Valley. Between the southern massifs of the Retezat, Parang and Surianu Mountains and the northern massifs of the Poiana Ruscai Mountains and Metalici Mountains we find depressions with lowlands and high terraces, and along the Mures River a wide depression area.

The beauty and variety of scenery and the richness of cultural items make the County of Hunedoara a remarkable touristical target . The atractions found here can be split into 5 major regions : Tara Zarandului, Valea Muresului, Tinutul Padurenilor, Tara Hategului, Valea Jiului.

Located in the northern part of the county, encloses the Brad depression, limited by the Muntii Metaliferi Mountains and crossed by the Crisul Alb. Within this tourism area the following localities should be highlighted:

The Municipality Brad - an important mining center, also for tourism interest for housing the “Muzeul Aurului” (The Gold Museum) (one of the few institutions of this kind around the world, presents exhibits manufactured of native, crystal gold, minerals, equipment and tools used in the past, archeological objects regarding roman explorations within the Apuseni Mountains), an ethnographic collection as well as the statues of Crisan and Avram Iancu.
Tebea, Baia de Cris commune, holds the Avram Iancu memorial complex. The Panteon from Tebea, located 7 km north-west from Brad, where the “Gorunul lui Horea” is found, the place where in 1784, Horea spoke to the rebellious bondmen, and the grave of Avram Iancu, hero of the Romanian revolution in Transilvania between 1848-1849. Crisan- birth village, Ribita commune, with the memorial house rebuilt and the bust of Crisan, as well as the orthodox monastery “Crisan” the XIV-th century. The memorial house contains two building parts performed of oak wood. As a characteristic of the Zarandului Land, the house is on a rectangular plane with access entrances from an opened stoop. The house itself, covered with straw, is built with two rooms used today as museum.
Criscior-with the oldest architectural monument in Zarand-The orthodox church (1404)-building of the of the prince Vlad Balea, as well as an ethnographic and history museum of mining. The church is traditional type formed of nave, pro-nave and absidat altar, initially hexagonal, and starting the XIX-th century, semi-circular. The tower is massive and high located in front of the pro-nave. The picture within the pro-nave dates somewhere around 1395-1404. Also the representation of the Last Supper in circular composition may be found here.
Ribita - a church built by princes Vladislav and Miclaus, with a valorous wall painting (1417). The picture within the nave is Byzantine style and represents the founder of the church.
Vata de Jos - spa station of local interest, with mineral springs, thermal waters and sulphureous waters.

The most important monument of Gothic lay architecture in Transylvania (14th c.), is to be found at Hunedoara. Built on the place of a former Roman camp, it served as a defence stronghold, as well as a princely residence. In 1409, together with 40 villages of the same area, the Hungarian king Sigismund of Luxembourg offered it as a present to the Romanian prince Voicu (father of Transylvania's future ruling prince Iancu of Hunedoara) as a reward for his military deeds (the legend of the Raven, in Romanian "Corb", from which the name of the Corvinesti dynasty derived, hints at a love affair between the king and prince Voicu's wife). A visit to the medieval castle may take one to the Gallery, to the towers with picturesque names, i.e. the Do not fear, Capistrano, the Maces' Tower, to the Knights' Hall, an impressive reception hall, to the White Bulwark, a former food storehouse, to the Council Hall (with paintings on the walls displaying Romanian princes' coats of arms), to the Chapel. They say that the 30 m deep Fountain within the castle's walls was dug in by three Turkish prisoners who were promised to be set free when they had reached the water level. When, after 15 years of toil they did accomplish the task, their masters did not want to keep their promise. So the legend has it that the inscription they wrote on a wall nearby expresses the Turks' bitter disappointment "You may have water, but you have hardly any soul". (information from
