Description of the destination Fagaras

Fagaras is a place that belongs to the county of Brasov. It has a population of 36,121 inhabitants.
The town Fagaras is located in the area called Fagaras Country, one of the oldest and most important geographical and ethno-cultural areas in Romania. This area is known as Olt Country and bordering with Lovistea Country, Barsanei Country and Almasului Country. It is one of the biggest and best individualized contact depressions of Transylvania, bordered to the south of Fagaras Mountains and Persani to the north, north-east of the southern limits of the Târnavelor plateau; the strong course of the river Olt crosses the area from east to west.

Landscape guarded by peaks higher than 2500 m (Fagaras) or some of them with hights of 1600 m (Breaza and Persani Mountains), and also by hills, Fagaras depression is looming as a piedmont plain storey finished in northward in Olt meadow. It is a real amphitheater that develops in three a stages relief under the monumental northern slopes of the Fagaras Mountains.

It should be noted that this geographical-historical space is subdivided into two parts: a smaller eastern area, starting from Mateias in the vicinity of the canyon of Racos and up the Sercaiei valley, and a western larger area, between Olt River and Fagaras Mountains. Through the roads linking the Hârtibaciu valley, Barsei Country and Homorodul, the Country of Fagaraş has always been a bridge between the two countries, a door always open for movement from one country to another. (Stefan Metes).
The most important water course is Olt River, which in the Fagaras city has a rate of 49 m³/sec.
In Fagaras Country there are found in many historical vestiges, cultural and religious buildings that testify to the age of these lands, such as:

- Cistercian Monastery, in Carta village (1202);

- Evangelical Church in Cincu, XII century;

- Basilica, in the village Halmeag, XII century;

- Badea Cartan Memorial House.

The settlement was mentioned for the first time in documents in 1291, as the Fogros.

Regarding the toponymy of this town there are several assumptions:

1. Fagaras name may be given by the Hungarian name Fogor or Peceneaga, by the combination of words Fagar su, water ash.

2. Historian Nicolae Iorga, mentions the event that this village would be located near a rich beech forest. And the locality would have taken its name from this tree, becoming Fagaras.

3. But the most important assumption is that the initial name Fógros underpins the German name Fogarasch.
The fortress was built in 1310 by Ladislau Apor and around it was born gradually Fagaras town, which gave the name of Fagaras Mountains.

Points of tourist interest:

- The most important attraction point in Fagaras is Fagaras Fortress, construction built in XIV century on the place of an earth fortress of XII century. It was turned into a fortified castle in the XVI century, becoming the princely residence of XVII century. Currently, Fagaras Fortress shelters the Museum of Fagaras Countyr, City Library, a restaurant and wine cellar.

- World War I Romanian Heroes’ Monument;

- Badea Cartan Statue;

- Fagaras municipality can be an excellent starting point for those who wish to do mountain climbing, to varying degrees of difficulty in Fagaras Mountains;

- Sambata de Sus Tourist Complex, situated on Sambata Valley, at the edge of the forest, near the Monastery Brancoveanu, at an altitude of 670 m;

- Every year in late August there are held “the Days of Fagaras”;

Fagaras municipality is crossed by the national road DN1, which connects Brasov (66 km of Fagaras) and Sibiu (at 76 km). Together with three other county roads and the railway, this national road ensures the infrastructure necessary for economic activities and fast direct links with the rest of the country.
