The municipality of Curtea de Arges, founded in 1330, has a special air, full of history and mystery, being the first capital of the Romanian Country, enveloped by legends and sayings, including the best known of them (the one of the master Manole). Curtea de Arges is one of the oldest settlements in Romania, offering to its tourists a unique view, old buildings, small streets and inviting terraces.
Curtea de Arges Monastery. Of the monuments that have been forged over the centuries, the church built by Neagoe Basarab is the most valuable construction of clerical art and architecture. The legend sais that Master Manole paid for the construction of this monastery with the price of his own life and the life of his wife. The old iconostasis and some icons from the time of Serban Cantacuzino (XVIIth century) are in the collection of art objects from Curtea de Arges Monastery. Inside the monastery visitors can see paintings of King Carol I and Queen Elizabeth, and also the evangel written in golden letters by Queen Elizabeth. In ante - temple, there are the crypts of Neagoe Basarab, of Radu de la Afumati and of the royal couples of Romania, Carol I and Elizabeth, Ferdinand and Maria.
