Description of the destination Campina

Campina is a city in Prahova County.

Campina municipality is located in the Prahova Valley area and it is surrounded by three rivers (Campinita, Doftana and Prahova), that shaped Campina terrace.

Campina's geographical location made it over the years, a recreational place by its natural beauties.

In 2002, Campina had a population of 38,789 inhabitants.

Campina was documentary mentioned for the first time in 1503, appearing in the records of the merchants from Brasov who transited the Prahova Valley, an area used as a commercial way, being, since the XIV century, a way of communication between the provinces of Transylvania and Wallachia. Although in royal official documents it was mentioned as “Prahova customs”, it is clear that Campina, thanks to its geographical position at the entrance of the Carpathians and to the fact that it is located at half way between Bucharest and Brasov, it was the central point for control of goods. Because of this, Campina has undergone a rapid development.

On the way to Campina there were a lot of inns. Here, following a written request addressed to Prince Moruzi by Scarlat Campineanu in 1799, every Monday it will be organbized a cattle fair, which brings new benefits to the locality. In1822, Campina was the most important Customs locvality in the Romanian Country, the element which gives it importance being the oil. Then, for many years, Campina has suffered a stagnation in development, the customs being moved to Breaza and then to Predeal.

With the beginning of the oil exploitation, the settlement starting developping again. Campina’s inhabitants occupations in this period were: agriculture, merchant, beekeeping, oil mining. Here worked eight water mills, situated on the Prahova and Doftana Rivers

In the place of the actual train station was the office of engineer Anghel Saligny, who designed and built the bridge at Cernavoda.

Other personalities related to Campina: Cezar Bolliac hosted by I. Campineanu in 1836, describes the beauty of the places.
