Description of the destination Alba Iulia

Alba Iulia city is the residence of the Alba County.

Between 1541 and 1600, the city became the capital of the Transylvania Voivodship and for a short time was the capital of the first union of the Romanian States.

The city of Alba Iulia is symbolically named the Soul Capital of the Romanian nation, a status confirmed on October 15, 1922, when here took place the official coronation ceremony of King Ferdinand I and Queen Mary, as kings of all the Romanians in the provinces united.

The main historical area of the town is the Alba Carolina Fortress, developed a lot by Charles VI. The Vauban-style fortress with 7 bastions, in star shape, was built between 1716-1735, according to the outlines of the Italian architect Giovanni Morando Visconti, being the most impressive fortress of its kind in Southeastern Europe, mainly due to the triumphal six gates providing access.

The main tourist attractions located in the interior of the fortress:

The Roman Catholic Cathedral;

Horea, Closca and Crisan’s cell;

The Obelisk erected in memory of Horea, Closca and Crisan;

The Museum and the Union Hall;

The Batthyaneum Library;

The Apor Palace;

The Princes Palace;

The December 1 University.

The most valuable monument of architecture in Transylvania, is the Roman Catholic Cathedral  St.Michael, a remarkable work of architecture in the late Romanic style and is the same age as the famous Notre Dame in Paris.
Inside the cathedral are two important works of art that have escaped the terror and oppression of communism, representing the Romanian monarchy in that period, King Ferdinand and Queen Mary, heads crowned in 1922 in the cathedral.

Inside the Roman Catholic Cathedral is buried governor John of Hunedoarai. On the left side of the Roman Catholic Cathedral, over the glass windows you can see an interesting positioning of the three heads of horses with three ears, each head with two ears. In the crypt of the cathedral was buried the Bishop Aron Marton.
